Two defendants were charged with federal mail fraud based on allegations that they participated in a large mortgage fraud scheme investigated by the FBI and IRS and prosecuted by multiple federal agencies. After a hard-fought jury trial in the Eastern District of California, where the government presented 26 witnesses and hundreds of exhibits, the jury acquitted both defendants on all counts in just over one day of deliberations. The verdict marked a rare loss for federal prosecutors and the first acquittal in more than 23 years on that judge’s bench.
