Before you join a remote hearing

  • Join 10 minutes early and use your full legal name as your Zoom name.
  • Remote appearance is up to the judge. In Hayward, most hearings other than status conferences must be in person.
  • Some departments need written notice first. Hayward Dept. 513 needs notice filed and served at least 10 days before the hearing.
  • If the link fails, call the clerk right away. Missing court can lead to a bench warrant.

Can’t make it to court?

In many misdemeanor cases your lawyer can appear for you, so you don’t have to go at all. On felonies we can often ask the court to excuse you from routine hearings. Ask us if your case qualifies.

Rabin Nabizadeh is my lion!  Sitting in that cell hearing him passionately argue for bail, I was so relieved my husband hired him.  At the end, I got a misdemeanor.  Thank you Rabin for saving my family.

Remote court appearance FAQs

Can I appear in court by Zoom in California?

Often, yes, but the judge decides. Many arraignments, status conferences and pretrial hearings allow it. Trials and some sentencing hearings usually require you in person.

How do I find my department number?

It’s on your citation, bail bond receipt or court notice, usually labeled “Dept.” or “Courtroom.” You can also look the case up in the county’s court records with the lookup above. For Alameda County cases, our Santa Rita Jail guide walks through Odyssey step by step.

What if the Zoom link doesn’t work?

Call the clerk for that department before your hearing time, and save proof that you tried to join, like a screenshot.

Can my lawyer go to court instead of me?

In most misdemeanor cases, yes. For felonies you usually must be present, though some hearings can be waived.

Can family members watch the hearing on Zoom?

Many Bay Area courts let the public watch remotely. Rules vary by courtroom, so check with the clerk first.
